Who does Pilates?

"The Pilates Method teaches you

to be in control of your body and not at it's mercy."

-Joseph Pilates

Pilates can benefit diverse health challenges, wellness interests, rehabilitative needs and athletic performance goals. The broad range of needs and conditions that Pilates supports speaks to its universality. The degree of positive change experienced depends on each person’s condition or circumstances and frequency of sessions.

Occupational and Posture Support

People with work or hobbies that require extended periods of sitting, at a computer or in a car, often have forward rounding of their shoulders, upper spine and/or slumping in the spine. Sitting for long periods can lead to tightness in the low back and legs. Pilates can help maintain an upright posture by stretching and strengthening the chest, spine, core and back. Clients that work in offices have said that after adding Pilates to their exercise programs, they no longer take pain relievers for backaches or struggle with discomfort during their workdays.

Athletic Performance

Pilates focus on core strengthening can lead to improved speeds and endurance for athletic interests such as running, swimming, cycling, skiing and field sports like soccer. Golfers report improved swings and horseback riders say they feel more in control. Both attribute this to an increase in overall strength and connection to their cores to help them engage muscles and power movement.

Rehabilitative Exercise and Spine Conditions

Pilates can be rehabilitative exercise after joint replacement and back surgery or giving birth. It is not a substitution for physical therapy (PT) but may be done after completing PT depending on each person’s circumstances. Pilates can support individuals with scoliosis and other spine conditions including rounding forward of the upper back, over-swaying of the lower back and flatback. Exercises are selected and modified for individuals with osteopenia and osteoporosis. Plantar Fasciitis pain can improve with foot, ankle and leg exercises. Depending on your medical condition, it may be necessary to get a doctor’s release before starting Pilates.
